Calin Dover Tarrats

Desde su nacimiento en Nueva York y su crianza en el área de San Juan, su graduación en Trabajo Social de la Universidad del Este, hasta sus múltiples vivencias en tiempos de guerra y su extensa experiencia en la práctica artística urbana--léase graffiti--, esta biografía accidentada causa que Dover Tarrats traiga a su pintura la energía del investigador plástico comprometido. Cuando un artista emergente realiza su primera exposición, la misma tiene el peso de la mirada académica sobre sí la cual la enmarca dentro de los contextos contemporáneos del quehacer artístico. Pero el mérito principal estriba no en si la investigación plástica cabe en las estructuras convencionales, sino, si es fresca, vigorosa, y promete nuevas soluciones. Y son estas cualidades que me atraen a la muestra de esta primera exposición de Dover Tarrats.

En su bitácora electrónica, el artista describe su pintura como jeroglíficos orgánicos, intimando que hay en estas abstracciones una narrativa sumergida dentro de la superficial investigación de los círculos. Dice en su escrito:
“La palabra círculo proviene del latín “circulus” que es el diminutivo de “circus” y que significa "cerco"....uno hace eso, trata de cerrar círculos, abre otros y uno se sienta en círculos y los círculos se lo tragan a uno y uno termina dentro de círculos.”

En realidad, sus círculos son meramente la huella de uno de los medios de la creación--- la lata de pintura---trabajada, transformada y disfrazada. Es este detalle hace que la obra sea tanto sobre la pintura como pintura, como de la narrativa circular sumergida dentro de la iconografía abstracta.

En la pintura de Dover Tarrats se palpa la tensión entre la estructura geométrica y la demanda de la pintura emergente: la geometría provee el andamiaje y la pintura misma provee el momentum o energía autónoma. Pero esto no es un grito primordial ni una erupción emotiva de pintura de acción a lo Pollock. En esta manifestación de interioridad, el artista nos lleva hasta el “filo de la navaja” en indecisión. En un momento nos preguntamos si estamos ante un diálogo con la pintura auto-referencial (color, forma, gesto, superficie) o si estamos presenciando el momento en que la “chispa creadora” transforma la abstracción en figuración; cual juego infantil de nubes, las formas se transforman en “criaturas” o mapas enigmáticos que reflejan realidades existentes independientemente de nosotros. Y del mismo modo que apa recen, desaparecen: nos quedamos otra vez a solas con la abstracción y la pintura como sujeto.

No queremos ignorar que Calin está en proceso de re-inventarse, de artista urbano en artista-candidato-a-graduación de la Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico. Y como toda obra transicional, las pinturas muestran los rasgos de dos épocas: rasgos grafiteros, que aún no han sido re-pensados en su totalidad y rasgos de la pintura formal, aún en gestación. Sin embargo, esta muestra es prueba que la experimentación y la investigación son el modus operandi de este nuevo artista y augura para Dover Tarrats un desarrollo gradual pero firme en el ámbito de la plástica puertorriqueña.

Calin Dover Tarrats (b. 1969 Bronx, New York) is a multidisciplinary artist who focuses in the studies of sociology, physics and social problems. Using abstract organic images, he makes prints, paintings, installations and sounds that investigate space as a reflection of the multiplicity of dimensions. A creative spark that transforms an abstraction into figuration, the forms is transformed into "creatures" or enigmatic maps reflecting existing realities independently of us. His work urges a reconsideration of the obvious that also brings the banal and everyday life into an altered focus. He is constantly studying the conditions of social-events in terms of how it affects us as individuals or as a society and how we react to these issues based on Abraham Maslow and his analysis of human needs.
